All of us with localized keyboard layouts have problems playing SDL games (no up/down keys), and switching to english keyboard layout seems to be the only workaround.

Wouldn't it be possible to create a layout switcher applet to easily switch between local/english and place it like the brightness applet?

I wonder if the Input method switch Control+Space could be used for this...

That key's already used for Emacs! (It's "set mark"). I use it, anyway :-)

But seriously, wouldn't a status bar applet be better UI than an easy to accidentally type keyboard layout switch? If you do switch by accident and you don't know what happened, you could really do with a visible way to see what the state is and to change it back (because you might not know the key sequence). control+space is not hard to mistype when you're typing other control+letter combinations a lot.

Last night I thought a bit more about this (when I should have been sleeping)...

It would be nice if the status bar applet switched between the selected local keyboard layout and english and nothing else. Keep it simple...

Sorry for the butt-ugly pic but You get the idea...

If I would press that button now it would say "English, Nederlands" instead (or maybe just English)...

Knock yourself out.

This only does local layout (as chosen by you)<->English.

During install - if your layout is not already set to a non-English one - you will be asked to set the local layout. The local layout can be changed after install simply by opening the Text input Control Panel and choosing a different, non-English layout from the one chosen during install.

Just press the button and it'll switch.

This is a great alternative to hacking-in keyboard switching for every SDL game!

Is it going to extras? Be sure to describe what it's for if so...

Maybe...

It needs a better description and ukeyboard compatibility first, TBH.
