Interesting idea, but I'm not sure if it would work. When the back facing camera is directly against the surface of a desk (or a bed, or a mouse mat, or whatever), the light levels would be so low that I don't think any pictures that it could produce would be good enough to process to turn into mouse movements.

IMO there's no risk of having a scratch.

i know that the backpannel is not scratch resistant but to get to the camera lens, you'll have to move your phone over an object larger than 3mm.
That is the distance between the camera lens and the backside of your phone..

Try sliding your mouse over a 3mm big object and you'll see what i mean

And i mentioned i would use it in my bed because its a soft, but still a flat surface.

also, have you ever heard of n900fly?

I think he wouldn't mind a scratch

Indeed.. I thought maybe with the flash but then the lightlevel will probably be to high..

Can this be compensated by changing (minimizing) the exposure?
Or even better, would it be possible to use the red light when taking a picture? This light isn't to bright i think..

no, lol. I meant using it with the screen facing up how you'd normally use it, but using the front facing camera to read movement instead of the back one.
