Hi, can anyone recommend a GPS application for the n900 that is as good as waze or perhaps garmin mobile xt?

all you can do is test for yourself. Mappero is good but not actively developed. Some swear by Navit and some swear setting it up... CloudGPS is actively developed and butter smooth. UI requires keyboard for many changes. Real promise there but a way to go.
My favourite? ModRana. Personable and responsive dev and very active.
There are others - GeePS.... I assume you don't like nokias offering.

Try them as tastes and needs differ. None are perhaps as advanced as you want.

Best navigator application I have used in Maemo and Symbian devices is Sygic Mobile Maps. If I remember right they have promised free Sygic Aura for Meego for everyone who has bought the Sygic Mobile Maps for Maemo.

i wud say go for cloud gps aswell it is very fast and smooth but lacks in features. However modrana is feature rich, versatile and uses a touch interface.

Don't forget Marble.

It does offline navigation and does have spoken directions too...
