I am trying to find a Python sound library which has low latency, allows for both recording and playback and is cross-platform. I found the snack toolkit, which seems to be relevant, but there are only binaries posted for x86, and the most recent package is from 2005. I looked at GStreamer, but it seems to have poor latency on the N900, as well as it won't run under OSX (at least, not without a lot of time and patience). I am currently using PyGame, but there is no way to record audio (I believe this is because it is a wrapper for SDL). Does anyone know of a good alternative?
I also tried using GStreamer for recording and PyGame for playback, but GStreamer seems to hog the speakers (i.e. no sound comes from pygame while gstreamer is running).
