I'll paint my nails pink if this thread doesn't reach 1000 pages by New Years. 
Anyways, yeah Whatsapp is completely down.
A layman word for layman people:
Tarek and rest of the crew did an amazing job switching to latest official protocol. What that means is that this isn't just a fix but a long term solution.
All traffic is encrypted now, as it should be, so all you paranoid penguins can relax now. At least a little.
Since 0.2.7 there is 250+ fixes, changes, improvements...
Some are visible, some are not.
Some are due to Tarek only and some we all did together.
Some are even contributed by mere members here.
What I'm trying to say is, thank you all.
Just remember the first 10 pages of this thread and see how far it's come now.
