My posts on some threads (such as this one) are high on the vitriol, and on some others, they're not. It obviously depends on the subject. I'll praise some things to the heavens (MediaBox, the new IM framework), and slam other things (Nokia's lack of communication/care).

I suppose part of the reason I react this way is the fact that I've seen Nokia going down a slippery slope for the last few years. The move from a company that produces kick-*** devices to an internet services company scares me. The fact that they seem to no longer communicate with their users scares me.

Again, I just don't think people are paying attention. If you look at the mailing lists, at maemo.org, personal blogs, at bugzilla and on #maemo, you will see plenty of communication from all sorts of maemo and Nokia guys. Expecting them to come here all the time is a little over-the-top (particularly considering the large amounts of senseless vitriol that ends up being spewed around here). Still, Quim and others regularly frequent these forums, one just has to open their eyes a bit and pay attention.

The general is correct. "No longer communicate" is hyperbole.

Please stop.
Maemo.org forums are intended for developers only.
Personal blogs are not official communication channel of Nokia with users of Nokia tablet.

I don't expect anything.
Just tell me what is a nick name of Quim at this forum .

My search for Quim in Members List show

I don't expect anything. I expect professional on-line support of a commercial product by Nokia, provided by Nokia not the community of other users, sharing the same problems.

The solution to the problem is hidden in maemo.org.

The is an Index of /pool/ at repository.maemo.org

Please tell me which hardware, OS matches which one
Trying to install 10 applications on-line I am visiting respositories
and download every version of packages, libraries to see
it works or it doesn't work.
It takes me hours, days, weeks.

I live off-wifi and download packages first to PC than to tablet, trying to install them.

It takes me hours to match application packages with libraries, dependencies.

I don't need Quim.
I need 1 smart guy to test every installable application matching every hardware, OS system, write a report, giving name of a repository with dependencies and showing how much time it takes to download, install and have working any and every installable applications.
And if any application packages fails, telling me what's wrong, why, for what reason.

And finally downloading installable applications matching hardware/ embedded system/ software to one working live 24h on-line repository.

That's all I need. I can pay for.

What you call blogs is information noise generated by private persons.
Blogs are ok, so tell me what is an official blog of Nokia, providing
on-line help and support as requested above.

Some blogs say kismet + gpsd should work some day.
Contacted Cezary, who ported kismet do maemo
and he is not aware of any such working solution.

So as long as Nokia Tablet is a commercial product, not free/open hardware/software given for free/ to download,
I expect to be provided with quality service , sup[port and advice from a manufacturer, not from a developer or community member.

I can pay extra cash for such official, professional service as it deserves it.

People just talk because they have problems unsolved with Nokia Tablet.
Just let people to talk having all problems with Nokia Tablet successfully solved.

If a number of applications is 100, 200, 300, 400 ... more
and a number of systems 5 - 10
and a number of hardware 3-5

It may take some time for Nokia to test each application but
why not to hire few smart guys, students, donate them with free tablets and let them test each and every application, system, hardware and write a clear report describing each application,
installation time,
telling which dependencies/ libraries are missing
and what part of hardware is corrupt, mulfunctioning, should be replaced.

Traffic generated at forums comes from unhappy users not happy ones.
The more traffic means more problems, less happinness.

Problem of product quality is up to Nokia, Tablet Project Manager at Nokia not users or a community.

Nokia Tablet is Embedded System not open hardware system.

Nokia is showing no interest to contact and give money back to unhappy users.

Quality of a product, services, applications, hardware parts has been many times described by users as poor.

So please don't call me a beta tester, developer, fun of Tablet.
I just paid money and wish to be satisfied with quality product, quality service and quality applications.

Ask Nokia to protect my consumer's rights.

Shh! That last post was pure comedy gold. Don't interrupt his flow.

- i find this to be a valid complaint... however, if you just enable Nokia's 'official' repositories, you'll have the latest and greatest for the NIT...

- the scattering of repositories, IMHO, is a result of convenience of available resources for a particular developer and the inconvenience of using hosting facilities at maemo.org... the site itself is a bit wonky... for example, i registered as a user, posted a comment to a news article, but the comment is 'invisible' to anyone unless i log in - even though other comments are visible (strange behavior)... not only that, but a javascript menu appears overlaid (on top of) and blocking the 'normal' site menu, with menu items that takes one to a commercial content-management web site!

- developers working alone can (and have) lead to lib incompatibilities for NIT applications, as most (apparently) work individually rather than in concert - although there is good discussion and give-and-take in the mailing lists, it's a shame there isn't more coordination...

- this shows in other ways, such as applications having different menuing schema, different key controls, etc.

- but there is nothing wrong with all this! this is the way FOSS things work... if you want something bad enough, scratch your own itch!

- but all said and done, i am very happy with the availability and breadth of applications for the NIT... could things be better? of course! i'd really like to see:

1. 'mirroring' of maemo.org's and other repositories

2. an automatically generated torrent for a DVD image containing a snapshot of NIT software for os2007/os2008

3. improvement of maemo.org's web site (or better bandwidth)...

4. adoption of regular .deb installs, with a synaptic-type interface for app/system software management...

5. better documentation of the NIT file system and hardware...

- but i am very grateful for what is available and for the work of all developers who have contributed to this platform... i believe the NIT is destined to be a classic...

Before linux_author was, well, a Linux author, he did a lot of programming for DOS machines, and the experience did not leave him entirely unscathed. He's not starting sentences that way, it's his DEBUG prompt.

I keep wanting to ask this, but didn't want to come across as an ***. Thanks!
