I think you wanted the phrase “never opened”, or “unopened”.

I received my Jolla phone from Mr Jeebus. Took about seven business days to the U.S. Box was sealed and the phone works as I had hoped.

This is my first experience with the Jolla, should I immediately install the latest version of SailFish?

Based on my personal experience, I strongly recommend installing all OS updates before installing anything else and setting up your email accounts etc.

Thanks for the advice but unfortunately, I received it too late. An hour after I posted. I started the download for the first update, turned on developer mode, set up gmail and then tried to reboot.

I found some posts regards this using the recover mode. I'll give that a chance before asking for more help.

thanks,
Rob

"Tried to reboot" as in, it did not work? Sorry to hear that. Been there, done that.
To Jolla's credit, recovery mode works fine. As it was a new device, I did not mind reverting to factory defaults.

I see the Jolla logo when restarting and after 5-8 seconds the screen goes blank.

Ahh, yes. The infamous black screen. Recovery mode to the rescue!
