I am really over the fence on the GPD Win. It looks nice but I can get over the feeling of vaporware. It doesn't help that they still seem to be promising changes in the CPU.

I am also not sure if it's more pocketable than the Sony microPCs :/ If it was, I could see myself carrying that every day as main desktop...

If the niche system doesn't sell, they can just change the software, and sell as an Android device. They can possibly win the niche at low risk.
That is a good case and indeed prudent from the manufactuder to do that. But it does not prescribe that the $ALTERNATE_OS variant has to be sub-par, nor does it explain where the average Joe comes in to creating a good HW device by a small producer, which was the bit I was questioning

Folks, have you tried it yourself? What's your experience? Is it worth it or slider forever?
I've been using this little sucker with everything...
I have a slightly older one that looks identical too...
they work fabulously with the nxx0's,
the android pixi 3 (4.5),
and I have and my laptops too...
and the size of it is just right ...
been thinking of making my own impromptu universal leather (perhaps hard shell moose antler one some day) device wallet with one of these ...
I'm that impressed.

I have tried ones with touchpads etc... but they don't make those very compact...for now.

So for the time being.... $10 Canadian currently ...does it for me.

marmistrz, if and when i get some experimental packages I'll post links here of course. Browser (embedlite + "gtk3mozembed" perhaps) would be my first planned app after its working ok.

If you have a desk, or at least some half-way comfortable place to sit down, then these might be an option.
But when I'm in such a situation I would rather use my laptop, which I'd have with me most likely, if I have a bag that's big enough for the bt-keyboard in your link.

Where my N900 really shines is in crowded trains, where it's even hard to find a place to stand comfortably. If you ride by train, then you surely know this situation, as it seems to be pretty similar in Poland and Germany:
You have 30cm to move in any direction, can hardly hold on to any grip nearby and have to "surf" the bumps in the track that hit unexpectedly every few seconds.
In these situations I need a device that I can hold in one hand in any orientation, because I'm not a professional "surfer", and I need to be able to get back to work quickly without re-adjusting to much stuff, after the occasional stumble.

The N900's fixed-slider-design is perfect in this situation. So would be a clamshell device with a stable hinge. My 9" netbook is a bit too bulky in the end, but I think a Pyra (or a GPD for that matter) would do fine.
Wobbly hinges, like smartphone+bt-keyboard in a common envelope are not that great because by the time you re-arranged it after a bump, the next bump will probably hit you and you won't have any time for working. Anything that's comprised of two totally seperate devices isn't even worth thinking about in this situation.

It's all true. Unfortunately: no 5" sliders ;(

Browser under DebiaN900?

If yes, then it's good idea to discuss, plan. A couple of freelancers playing out with Debian on N900 is not enough to bring this wonderful piece of hardware back to life.

Many questions appear: should we bring h-d? What about compatibility with Maemo apps? Harmattan apps? Calls? The UI? Exchangability of DEs (GnomeShell, Unity)? Nemo UI (Glacier?) ? Sailifish UI someday?
Maemo-only frameworks (alarmd)? Accounts integration? On and on and on.

How far do we stray from vanilla Debian?

Feel free to start a thread for it and ping me about it. And if nothing arises within few days, I'll do that myself.

/note: N9/N950 will benefit from it too, thanks to the N9/N950 kernel upstreaming force in progress

So, the GPD Win team has upgraded their CPU to Intel Z8700 (or even Z8750 if they can find a supplier)

Sounds very nice!

Well, it uses Cherry Trail, so I'm really skeptical on driver support. We have one Bay Trail device, will never buy anything Bay Trail.

Released in 2014, in June 2016 it starts to barely work. Still some drivers missing.

Call me biased, but to me it sounds like yet another excuse they will use when they fail to ship the device.

Even if so far I've had little success with my Atom phone that actually runs Android (oh, the irony), I am still not used to the idea of a device capable of running x86 windows being "barely able to run GNU/Linux".

What drivers are missing?
