Worked fine last night playing a game of Sudoku. I have not installed any new applications in weeks.

Pulled it out this morning to check something. Was turned off. Tried to turn it on with no response. Put it on the charger for an hour. Still will not turn on.

I happen to have a Nokia E62 that uses the same battery. Turned off my phone and swapped batteries. 770 still won't boot with a fully charged battery.

When I plug it in I get the "charging" word and icon but no response from the power button. I can sometimes get the initial boot screen to come up for half a second but it never goes any further.

Any suggestions before I contact Nokia tech support?

David

Might want to try to re-flash it. Best of luck.

Once the 770's charging, it boots into a limited version of the OS to manage the power flow: this is why the power button doesn't work - it's already on.

It sounds like the battery ran out completely. Try:
  1. Leaving it on charge for, say, an hour.
  2. Unplug the charger.
  3. Turn it on.
  4. Put it back on charge once fully booted.

Thanks for the replies but "It's dead, Jim".

Tried the flash. Surprisingly the flash took with no errors. But it still would not boot. Same symptoms.

Tried the on off charger trick and even fully charged a battery using my phone then swapped it into the 770 with no joy.

Guess I get to experience the fabled Nokia Repair service. It is all packaged up and will go out today. They claim 7-10 day turnaround so I might have it back by Christmas but I doubt it.

Oh well, I was looking for an excuse to the latest upgrade but I wish I could have backed up my repositories first.

Just a suggestion.

Try pulling the battery out and letting it sit for awhile. That way, if anything is running inbetween battery swaps it should die. I would even try powering it up without a battery in an attempt to bleed any capacitors that may be holding a charge.

Afterwards, replace the battery, plug in the charger, and try to power it on.

It seems like some minor issue that should be fine if you can get passed it.

I had this happen once and unfortunately I can't give you a difinitive answer as to how I brought it back to life. When the charging screen appeared I left it for a while, then held the button down to force a shutdown. Seemed to boot up after that if memory serves me.

Also, can you pop the battery out and just run it off of AC power? Maybe the battery charging/power monitoring circuitry is pooped.

Tried the discharging the caps thing... Left it battery-less for several minutes with no joy. Did not try running it off AC power but I know it is not a charging circuit problem. My cell phone has the same battery and I was able to put a fully charged battery in there with no better results.

I sent mine in for repair

Repair History:

Status Date Status
12/05/2006 Repair in Progress
12/01/2006 Received (9:00AM I might add)

So thats 13 days today, with no update. I used the nokia repair status page once I confirmed with UPS that it was delivered. It showed not recieved as of 12/2. I contacted them through email and they said to go check the website, which was now showing it was recieved. Tuesday 12/5 they apparently finally opened my box. I contacted them in email again on 12/11 to see if I could get another update. I was basically told they are working hard and they try to have repairs done in a timely manner blah blah blah. Which means I have better things to do than look into your repair status.

What I am trying to say is, I am hoping I will get mine by Christmas, I think you don't have a chance in hell in getting it back this year.

I hope they send me it back soon, I am dying without it.

Good luck, BTW, I sent mine to Rogers, MN - is this where the website is telling you to send it to?

Per NOKIA Executive Repair Escalation and the EMAIL I sent to Cust Service saying that I didnt want to send the NOKIA 770 to the wriong place AGAIN, the NOKIA n770 should go to:

in order to have your Nokia 770 Internet Tablet replaced, we recommend sending the device to the address listed below:

Nokia Authorized Repair Center
AC/O Palo
2914 Green Cove Road
Huntsville AL 35803-3526

Please include:

-A copy of your proof of purchase for warranty verification

-A description of the problem

-Your phone number and return mailing address. (Not a P.O Box)

-We recommend using a padded envelope and use a shipping method where you can obtain a tracking number.

Please allow a turnaround time of 7 to 10 business days.

If you have any additional questions, please contact us. To ensure proper handling, please continue to use the current subject line.

The above thread actually reminded me that I had a NOKIA 6170B in for service. I had called and was dealing with NOKIA Executive Repair Escalation Team, and was supposed to get a call Monday or Tuesday and as always NO CALL. I have been dealing with since they received my phone on 10-23-2006. (That's October No Error). They sent phone to wrong repair depot via the Website (Common Issue). So they then shipped my phone from Florida to Alabama. It arrived (rather was marked received) on 11-7. It then sat because they lost all the paperwork and did not know ho or what was wrong with the phone. After I saw ONLINE that it had sat there, I called was informed of this and told them my info. Then I kick back, all is well right? WRONG!. Then you see, the new AWAITING PARTS since 11-7 starts. Lets introduce the Online Report shall we?
So I'm gonna shorten this up. Multiple calls to different depts. Multiple EMAILS. Multiple Promises. Finally I see that after almost TWO MONTHS, they have shipped the phone back to me on 12-13-2006. But wait, one more arrow in the wound. I have been waiting TWO MONTHS. Look how they sent it back to me. US Postal Service. Here we have Executive Repair Escalation involved, and they rush my repaired phone back to me by the US Mail. BTW, as of 12-15, the Online Mail Tracking says it has received the information that this is heading their way electronically (Means the label has been created), but cannot even confirm it is actually en route. It could be sitting at NOKIA still. It has not been scanned received. (In all fairness US Postal Track and Confirm is another Joke as well)

In closing, this has been an absolute travesty, and more important an indication of how NOKIA Service has gone the wayside. From what I am seeing and reading here and other Forums, its not the exception, it is the norm.
