I'll admit I do not know the solution to view imagines in html email messages with the default client in diablo. There are some alternatives:

One is Claws-email:
http://www.claws-mail.org/maemo/

And install the Gtkhtml2Viewer plugin as well.

This displays html emails quite well but the rest of the app is less intuitive than the default email, so you may not like it.

I also regularly use my gmail and other web based email from a browser such as tear. I think ther is a gmail checker desktop app out there somewhere as well.

Cheers

Quickly mentioning hardware and software in the initial comment is always welcome...
So I sent a HTML email with about 15 images (to download, not attached) to my GMail IMAP account configured in Modest on the N810 and I have not found a way to do this either, neither in toolbar nor in the menu.

@Andre Klapper
I didn't think to that, posting in the 2008 forum...
BTW I'm on an n800

@qwerty12 is that a command line?
in the xterm it says ""No value to set for key: true"

so how to use it?

The gui way of fixing this is as follows:
1) Download and install gconf-editor from the repository
2) Open the app and click on "Apps" then "Modest"
3) You should see "fetch_external_images" in the right hand side, click the checkbox (or make sure it's checked) and you are done.
