Well I've been seeing people posting up their IMEI especially that thread on the mic issue.

Have a look at this - http://2.gp/esz

Indian operators are expected to block several million mobile phones tomorrow (1st Dec) as a government ban on handsets without a valid IMEI comes into effect.

I reckon there's already a hunt for a valid IMEI number...so keep them save if you don't want to get yours cloned. You might end up unable to use yours...

Posting IMEI number is bad.. but that is not the problem in India.

After 26/11 they dont want ppl to use anonymous mobile(chines, korean) handsets , which most of them doesnt have a IMEI number....

Its actually old news , they have asked carriers not to support Mobiles without IMEI number like 8 months ago.

your phone has to have an IMEI in order to register with the network

the Indian gov't are trying to force people to register their phones, as there are many PAYG phones where people bought in cash and there's no record of who owns them

here in the UK the operators work quite hard to get people to register so they have names and addresses, but it's still possible to buy a PAYG phone for cash and thus be able to be anonymous.

Well, I understand the concerns after 26/11 but what's to stop anyone from creating fake IMEI numbers? And what's to stop the next 26/11 being perpetrated by people with valid IMEI numbers?

Terror's societal impact: creation of an authoritarian state that victimizes its citizens on terrorists' behalf. Where does it stop? http://bit.ly/7wjubs
