It would be useful to show the number of apps open besides the two window little icon in the top left corner.

Please explain why this would be useful. To me the number itself isn't as important as the amount of resources used, for which there are several monitors that go into the status area.

Not a bad suggestion - it would be good to see if any apps are open from the home screen certainly.
