Wondering if anyone has any thoughts on what Ishould look at...
my bluetooth can no longer be switched on. I go to enable it and the device name is blank, clicking enable and entering a device name lets me 'save' but doesn't actually store any settings and does not start the bluetooth.
there aren't any messages in dmesg. So I'm not really sure what to check.

Anyone else experienced the same?

I'd love to say I hadn't messed around... but I did enable input support to get my keyboard working. which worked once. but then stopped working....not sure if that is related.

any ideas?

If Witter isn't working for you, eg crashes/doesn't start, gives errors etc etc. Please run it from x-term using:
run-standalone.sh python2.5 /opt/witter/witter.py

This will generate diagnostic output. Without this I cannot help you.

ok so spent some time figuring this out, mostly just looking at what i might have messed up. not totally certain but i believe at somepoint I edited /var/lib/bluetooth/(devid)/linkkeys becuase I'd had trouble with bluetooth keyboard.
in that edit I managed to leave a blank line at the start of the file.
I removed that blank line and rebooted. all now seems well again.
important lesson there about not messing with stuff at a low level unless you're prepared to break it :-)
