It's lichen (a fungus and an algae living symbiotically). You see other forms on rocks, gravestones etc (orange, greenish colour crusty blobs). They like clean air, which as RevdKathy lives in Cornwall, there is plenty of

Yes you are going to like it. Every National park in Canada are very quit and nice I am sure there is one near Moncton. This place is my complete get away from the city in the week end it's like paradise even in summer.

BTW.
If you want to process your image afterwards. I have found these two
softwares quite good at digital noise removing:
