I am seriously considering it - just incredibly busy with work, took a lot to get it where I wanted it to be - and shouldn't have to reflash to a global variant. It is appalling customer support from Nokia - outwith the usual "go out and buy an iPhone" response you get on here.

Thank you for the advice. Am a loyal but increasingly disillusioned and frustrated N900 user...

Ben

Nokia don't seem to have any policy regarding UK variant firmware, forgetting to release Maemo updates for UK firmware isn't the first time theyve done it, firmware releases for the majority of their phones over the past few years are either delayed or never show up atall for UK devices.
Wrong, The list of available regions for firmware 3.2010.2.8 has tripled since around Monday (15th March).
Using NAVIFIRM I can see the UK variant. Here is the full list:

You can download firmware using NAVIFIRM and flash it using Maemo flasher. Just backup before and restore afterwards.

That said, I don't know why there is a UK variant anyway. When I flashed the Global version I did not notice ANY difference at all from the UK one, it still defaults to UK settings etc.

I suspect the only difference is GPRS/3G settings being preinstalled, wherea on Global I instead got the settings sent automatically from O2 rather than being asked to choose from a list.

hi people,
im a noob to the N900, so this may sound stupid but ill ask.....
your all talking about upgraded firmware, can i do this with nokia pc suite's inbuilt upgrader thing ?
i dont even know how to flash my phone, it sounds complicated and as ive only had it 3 weeks i dont want to brick it by trying to reflash.
also would reflashing it myself invalidate my warranty ?
my phone is a UK one and is running version 2.2009.51-1.203.2
unless im looking at the wrong thing ?

Except, this list isn't accurate and i'm right. The firmware listed as "UK Ireland" is for Ireland, and it's the Global firmware variant. The 203 and 205 UK firmware variants do not, per my previous reply which was correct, have an update to pr1.1.1 as of yet.

Edit: For clarification, compare the firmware list shown by Navifirm under 3.2010.2.8 with 1.2009.44.1 (which has UK CV, firmware variant 203) and 1.2009.42.11 (which has UK CV variant 203, and Vodafone UK 205) - Even this list is incomplete as variants 203 and 205 have received OTA updates to 2.2009.51.1 despite neither being listed within Navifirm for this release (as no full firmware image for this version has been made available) and neither 203 or 205 has received OTA or full image updates to 3.2010.2.8.

Nokia Software Updater won't allow you to switch to the global firmware. As you're on the UK 203 firmware, your choices right now are to either stay with the UK firmware and hope for the slim chance that Nokia remembers the UK exists, or reflash your device using the Flasher tool to the global firmware per these instructions:

http://wiki.maemo.org/Updating_the_firmware#Windows

It's very hard to brick your phone by using the flasher, the only way youll realistically do so is if you disconnect / power down the phone in the middle of flashing. Beyond that, youll either get it wrong and the flasher won't do anything, or youll get it right and it'll reflash fine.

Other than having the 1.1.1 update, no. As far as it's possible to tell, the 203 and 205 UK firmware variants are identical to the Global firmware in terms of functionality.

Sorry for my mistake.
I was surprised though to see the list grow by so many regions this week.

I have flashed mine from the USA region to Greek, but as mentioned before there really is no difference. Reason I did it was to see if the hardware keyboard can be switched to Greek, but to no avail. Only the soft keyboard changes alphabets even with this region specific firmware.

As far as I can see it`s exactly the same as the US with the same options (I could do greek tin the menus and soft keyboard before)

Thought I'd never see the day, yellow exclamation just started flashing and it's a maemo 5 update. Low and behold 3.2010.02-8 is here for 203 variant!!
