This "state-based multitasking" isn't new, either. While I won't claim Nokia was the first, the N800 and N810 provided the ability for applications to save their state to disk via the libosso API and be suspended when the available memory was low. Unfortunately, I believe the only third-party app to do this was Xarchiver...

Here's another good topic to debate about:
From the Q&A (via Engadget):
Q: How do you close applications when multitasking?
A: (Scott Forstall) You don't have to. The user just uses things and doesn't ever have to worry about it.
A: (Steve Jobs) It's like we said on the iPad, if you see a stylus, they blew it. In multitasking, if you see a task manager... they blew it. Users shouldn't ever have to think about it.

It will be available on iPhone 3GS, Touch 3rd gen and iPad.
It won't be available on the original iPhone, iPhone 3G, Touch 1st and 2nd gen.

Strange that Iphone 3G gets iPhone OS 4.0 update (sans multitasking), but the original iPhone doesn't. They have same CPU, RAM, GPU etc.
Wonder how much crying that will cause.
