I had a look at the source a week ago, but my C is a bit rusty so I dumped it and rm -rf'd the working directory.
But from what I understand it was added by intention (not one simple line)

I'm getting somewhere with researching (not fixing) this, I think.

The version of hildon-desktop in PR1.1.1 is 2.2.120-4. Source is at http://maemo.gitorious.org/fremantle...op/trees/PR1_1. TheChangeLog for this version was last updated November 30 2009.

The version of hildon-desktop in PR1.2 is 2.2.135-2 (according to http://wiki.maemo.org/Maemo_5/PR1.2#Updated_packages). It's trickier to tell on gitorious but I think the source for this is at http://maemo.gitorious.org/fremantle...ec6a7348073fd2. The ChangeLog for this version was last updated March 03 2010.

So we're looking for differences between November 30 2009 and March 03 2010.

Looking at the ChangeLog at http://maemo.gitorious.org/fremantle...ster/ChangeLog and searching for "scroll", I see a couple of likely candidates between those dates, namely:

Code:
2010-02-02 Adam Endrodi <adam.endrodi@blumsoft.eu>

Increase decceleration of TidyFingerScroll because some users felt
	like in space.

2010-02-08 Adam Endrodi <adam.endrodi@blumsoft.eu>

	* src/tidy/tidy-finger-scroll.c (tidy_finger_scroll_init):
	  Tune the decceleration again.
Looking at the history of src/tidy/tidy-finger-scroll.c at http://maemo.gitorious.org/fremantle...inger-scroll.c we find the two changes, namely http://maemo.gitorious.org/fremantle...ode=sidebyside and http://maemo.gitorious.org/fremantle...ode=sidebyside

It looks like the deceleration was previously 0.99 in PR1.1.1, then changed to 0.85 in an unreleased version, and now in PR1.2 it is 0.90.

If anyone (Matan?) has the ability to recompile the PR1.2 branch of hildon-desktop with that number tweaked higher, ideally put into gconf so it can be tweaked by the user without having to recompile, that would be great.

Maybe. But I've tested today the iPad in a store and the scrolling in Safari was very much like the N900 menu in PR1.1. So it seems Apple has gone the other way...

Great find, pelago!
I'm a bit suprised the deceleration value is hardcoded and not included in transitions.ini...

Another thing that is strange is the deceleration in the browser and in drop-down listboxes is exactly like the App menu in PR1.1. It means users who felt like in space in the menu must surely still feel the same thing in other places...

Hi,

Thanks for all the research you guys did!
Has anyone filed a bug for this, or is it something that you think the community would be in best position to improve?

I personally thought that the fast scrolling of the menu in PR1.1 was the best thing about the menu. It's true that now we can change position for our favourite apps, but if one has many, it's still inconvenient and inconsistent to scroll down.

Choice is always best - so a parameter to tweak this setting would be the best approach I think.

@ pelago that doesn't seem to be it, compiled HD with 0.85 but it's the same (to me at least).

Same thing in settings menu. Worst scrolling I've ever seen.

Hope PR 1.3 will fix this

Oh dear, thanks for trying anyway. I haven't done any further investigation of the source, but it's all there on gitorious. Hopefully the relevant change can be found somewhere in amongst that code.

It might be worth compiling up the PR1.1.1 version of the code and running it on a PR1.2 device, just to make sure that that scrolls as expected. If it doesn't, then the change lies outside of hildon-desktop, and instead somewhere else on the device, e.g. in a shared library.
