As far as I know there isn't. It would be quite useful, it could also allow for faster status switching, for instance. Anyway, even though it's not ideal, you can add contacts individually to the desktop and they will show their status.

MyContacts (An app in extras-devel) doesn't have this functionality yet. But the developer plans on including it eventually once he figures it out.

there was...http://maemo.org/downloads/product/Maemo5/friendstatus/ but is not working anymore...I am still waiting for it, but it seems that the developer drop it...
Mostly skype status is what i need to know without to go to contact list.
And system is Maemo 5 ( N900)
