They know their future.

"Java will be faster than C++
This paper shows that it is possible for Java to have better general performance than C++, and that it is likely that this will actually occur. Java performance can exceed that of C++ because dynamic compilation gives the Java compiler access to runtime information not available to a C++ compiler. This will occur because the rapidly growing market for embedded systems will be driven to extend battery life. Since each CPU clock cycle consumes some energy, battery life is extended by improving performance, thus achieving more computation per clock cycle."

Nokia has kind of sad bad attitude against Java, although it would solve lots of problems with C++.

Meego needs Android VM to be successful, I think.

If performance is that much of a concern, you will still end up reverting to C or Assembly. And you could essentially say the same thing about C#, since it's similar to Java in many ways.

Of course, I remember hearing the same thing back in 1996. Here I am 14 years later doing most of my work in C.

Well, now that Java is in Oracle's hands, it's a risky proposition. Especially now that they're playing a dirty game against Google.

Then it might as well be Android.

If they wanted full control over the device, wouldn't they have been better off choosing a maemo device? The n900 would have fit the bill better, surely?
I wonder if Maemo and N900 or Android and any phone are
fast enough.

Although N900 can do some near real time stuff:
