i dropped my phone and since then the camera would switch on if the button is pressed unintentionally even if the lens cover is removed, any suggeston what could be wrong

It seems that nothing is wrong - it is default behaviour of this button. At least in my N900.

no usually it would ask for the cover to removed but now it just turns on the camera and stops call or music being played at the time

Take off the N900s back panel and check that the black and white squares are still intact on the camera lens cover. It seems like the N900 uses these to tell the position of the lens.
