New version available:
Comments are welcome!

Modified so that all files are saved to a new directory "770" instead of adding to the filename.
Support for Preview mode. Encodes only 30 first seconds of the video file.

New version!
0.80 23:20 9.4.2006

New features that are based on existing ideas by Jaffa.
- Added support for mono sound (toggled automatically for 32 kbit audio)
- Added support for optimized video.

What is optimized video?

For starters, it means, no black borders at the top and bottom, which means 15:9 aspect ratio.
What else, it means that MC automatically crops the source data to fit to the 15:9 aspect ratio.
Unfortunately this may have downsides as well.

Optimized view is still a bit of a beta, but you should get excellent results with it (like 352x288 resolution looks stunning!)

Thanks to konttori for taking my ideas up so quickly.

They've come from a command-line Media Converter I'm working on which supports all the above features but is also "preset"-based. These presets are known to output video which is guaranteed to work on the 770.

Currently, the two presets I've got are:
  • "smallest" which outputs mono, 32kbps audio with a video bitrate of ~80kbps and an image size based on a 224px width. This results in video at less than 1MB per minute.
  • "best" which outputs stereo, 128kpbs audio with a video bitrate of ~400kbps and an image width of 320px. This results in video around 4MB per minute.

Suggestions for other presets are welcome. The theory is that it should be impossible to generate video from the tool which refuses to play on the 770.

The script also works out the best framerate, handles frequency conversion etc. I've attached the current version (requires mencoder & Perl, but works on Mac OS X and Linux, at least).

Cheers,

Andrew (aka Jaffa)

Apparently there is some sort of bug in the version. I will look into it in 2 hours time and release a patched version.

The odd thing is that I just tested it on windows and linux by downloading the package from the web and installing it and it worked on both systems just fine.

I *DID* have a small bug for a period of time in the 0.80 release, which I quickly fixed and didn't add a new version number for that.

It might be that you have downloaded that version.

Did you try in the optimized or in normal way?
