Motorola did pretty well in carving a sub-brand out of android though, didn't they?

Among the Android handsets I have a soft spot for Droid series

Good as in going from nearly bakrupt to same kind of profit margins as Nokia now has.

Andoid+ARM is the "new Wintel". Decent business to be in as hardware manufacurer, but no a gold for anyone except Google.

Considering Nokia has not built a high end Mainstream device in the past 12 months the results are better then expected.

They increased Marketshare while Apple lost (of course different price points). Here are the Market Shares from Tomi Ahonen:

Ahonens quick comment:
It seems the low end Smartphones have really hit a nerv in the developing world... But I read that smartphone sales even in Europe were up for Nokia

Lets spread the word that Nokia is alive and kicking Regarding the 40% profit drop that everyone is citing. Really? It was a year of catch up and there was not so much profit there in the first place... I am highly optimistic for next FY.

Doesn't help much with current prolems as the growth isn't coming from N- or Eseries. It's the cheaper models growing in Europe as well, while the high-end continues to collapse.

Agreed.

But there is a positive reason to it.
They did not launch high end devices.... The good news is that they stopped releasing devices as they are trying to get it right next time. Anssi used the N8 as a main phone for months now and I believe it will be an instant hit. Of course the US bloggers will report badly on the look and feel of the interface because bashing Nokia brings page views

Webcast begins in five minutes. Let's see if OPK gets his 4,5 million or not. They simply have to comment about the rumours, and analysts are 100% guaranteed to ask about it during the Q&A part.

OPK

Keypoints about Symbian:
-Over 50 million S^3 to be sold within next year.
-S^3 devices to have unified software making control of platform easier than before
-Symbian about leveraging Nokia's whole range. Meego about high-end only. Nokia to capitalize on strenghts of both platforms.
-Many S^3 devices coming after N8.

Nokia in general:
-Handset unit still providing healthy profit.
-Europe growth not robust, but believes Nokia will move to stronger position in European high-end market on second half of this year.
-S^3 profits not flowing in until Q4. Profit expectations for Q3 roughly same as Q2.
-New dual-SIM phones to be big sellers in developing world, especially in India.
-OPK says he's very optimistic about future.
-Very happy about recent good news concerning Nokia Siemens Networks (Of course since those are about the only good news concerning Nokia recently).
-NSN now market leader in LTE orders.

Timo Ihamuotila
-Active Ovi services user growth from 77 to 114 million users.
-Fast USD/EUR exchange rate fluctuation affecting results from regions where USD used as main international currency (Africa/Middle-East)
-ASP and profit margin falling due to pressure at high-end models.
-Nokia still to invest in radio IP and R&D, despite selling antenna manufacturing to Renesans. Only exiting from manufacturing, not technology innovation, in radiotechnology.

OPK Ends session by saying that "Nokia now nearing the end of it's painfull platform transition." (Says this in very emotional tone.)

Q&A
-OPK beliefs that Meego will help in USA. Symbian too tarnished in USA. Meego developers given order to prioritize development for USA market, since it's the market where Nokia is weakest.

-Qt used to blend Symbian and Meego platform user experience close enough in order to avoid consumer confusion between platforms. Crossplatform development for providing software for both platforms. He reiterates that N8 is the only S^3 Nseries device, but not neccesarily last Symbian Nseries device.

-Analysts very sceptical about profit margins for Q3 and Q4

-OPK at times stumbling on his line of thought while answering questions. Sounds very stressed. Absolutely no information about the rumours concerning OPK.

So, now two executives leaving the company. Do you think this can result in any good news in lets say: less den 6 months?

Still don't see anything that can save the figures in Q4. and in Q1 n8 has reached its peak and hopfully n9 is alive and kicking...Just dont think that this is enough. The next one after n9 must be a monster and really increase marketshare in High-end segment or Meego is "useless" after that.

Metsämies, where did you get the sales figures of N900?. N900 is by no means a mainstream product, it's sales volume is a small fraction of total shipments.
Secondly, it is no more strongly marketed and Nokia has abandoned it totally, except being a nice test platform for Meego (just test bed, will not be supported by Nokia).
N900 has failed "ordinary users" like me. Superb HW and good OS has been spoiled with half-done apps. Core apps like calendar and email are so-so (sync issues etc.), no decent device-wide search, clumsy phone UI and last, king of crappy apps, Nokia Maps for Maemo.

Geeks and developers don't greate large volumes, who else would buy N900 now, when manufacturer has pushed it to side track?

Nokia stock is low already, since could be nice buy..maybe.

There are rumours in finnish media about finnish goverment buying 5-10% share of Nokia stocks. Mostly in order to stop speculation about Nokia takeover by Microsoft. Goverment funds hording the stock would obviously drive the price up quite a bit.
