I'd happily settle for DNA selling the device with plan and everything in Finland only but allowing for International (where law allows) sale of the phone unlocked, and a website in English

We are excited that HERE is providing its leading positioning services for Sailfish OS and that our maps application will be powered by HERE cloud services. This will help us deliver the optimal mobile maps experience to our customers,” says Jolla CEO, Tomi Pienimäki.

I hope that this does not mean that offline mapping is not available.

I guess somebody can ask via Twitter... maybe they'll be able to confirm this. HERE maps for iOS has offline maps, but it's as bad as Google's.

"Jolla ‏@JollaHQ 1 min

@MrJaketin We will share more about the maps and locations features in the device later."

I actually don't care if the background map data is from HERE or Google or OSM or whatever. What is important is that there is a good frontend and that the data can be stored and used (for example car navigation) offline.

I personally prefer HERE or OSM - Google is known to be inaccurate. I tested HERE in various places in Europe and it is suprisingly accurate. OSM I tried a little bit in EU and APAC and it is quite alright as well, it's also open which is nice and covers more terrain than HERE. Google hasn't updated their maps in years in my experience, so they missed the boat as far as I'm concerned.

I asked them about availability in Australia (I know there are some other members as well), seems like its not going to happen for a while. https://twitter.com/JollaHQ/status/400556783409692672
Hopefully it will be compatible with our networks in case it can be imported.
