Well I'll go ahead and say that Nokia's are probably thicker because they have more H/W features. For example, when comparing to a Droid/Milestone... People have already commented that the keyboard isn't that great to type on... How about the lack of a forward facing camera, or what I believe to be an inferior camera.

Better keyboard and better/additional camera take up space right?

The thing is these phones we are talking like N90, N93 or N95 are flagship phones and are phones from the feature war time. Comparing them to Razr doesn't make much sense. Especially if you are living in states you are probally getting a bit different image as Engadget mostly talks about high ends.

I believe Nokia still got world thinnest qwerty device with E71 that's a smartphone and got example 3,2mpx camera. Then there are phones like 6300, 6500c, E51, E52, E72, 5310 etc.

All that said N900 should be in a smaller package. Thought like 5800 i would guess it has been in development much longer than normal phone, but still.

What could you do with the razr? What can you do with the N900? That explains the size difference.

I'm still betting some of the N900's "wasted space" is critical for heat dissipation.

When looking at the WinMo bricks (literally) of some of my colleagues, I'm quite happy with the size of the N900.

good point.... but the nexus is slimmer, bigger processor.. more heat is generated...

i doubt about the keyboard... its just the design... or maybe 2/3mm because its raised....

ok if the 5mp carl zeiss requires that thickness, y not fill up the rest with a useable battery??

comparing the razr to the N900?? I noticed their new high-end devices have been quite thick.. but as some explained, its got better hardware (camera - I fully completely 200% agree tht no other phone has got a better 5mp than nokia's one)

Im happy with my N900.... Its a little too thick for me, but im happy with it because its a NOKIA.... if this same thing was made by motorola, forget it mate.............

The CPU is a big part, sure, but so are other components. And if the Nexus generates more heat but is slimmer, then I wonder about its ultimate lifespan...

My G1 used to generate more heat than the N900, too. I don't like a warm phone in my pocket.
The N900 OTOH stays cool all the time.

I don't mind walking around with a big bulge in my jeans if you know what I mean.

The only problem that I have with it's size is that I can't pull it out when I'm sitting down. kind of tricky when you have to answer a call on the bus when someone's sitting next to you.

Nokia makes many, many phones. some big; some not. Your question is literally (not an insult) ignorant.

As for the N900: it has 2 cameras--one of which is very nice. it has an IR port, a large battery, 32GB memory, TV out, a decent physical keyboard, 2 speakers, an FM radio, an FM transmitter, a stylus, and even a lanyard hole. Any phone with all that will be chunky. I prefer capability over style.
