I thought its "unlimited". I signed up to voda just to get the N900, and I made sure I got "unlimited web" with my contract?

You could try a giffgaff SIM (and a dual SIM holder if needed)

Vodafone Spain has now no limits to the data contracts. My speed is constant along the month...

in the uk every supplier advertises 'unlimited data' the question you have to ask is 'how limited is your unlimited data'. my local vodafone shop told me 500MB then £1 per mb after, with no other options. my friend said vodafone online said there are warnings and no immediate issue over 500mb.
i went with them anyway. so far I've used 130mb in nearly a month.

obviously my heaviest usage is in places with wifi.

Check out Witter, a twitter client for N900
http://danielwould.wordpress.com/witter

If Witter isn't working for you, eg crashes/doesn't start, gives errors etc etc. Please run it from x-term using:
run-standalone.sh python2.5 /opt/witter/witter.py

This will generate diagnostic output. Without this I cannot help you.
