Well, now there are a LOT more N900s about.. at the summit. With no NDA. So maybe this can be figured out quickly.

The NDA is not the only problem. The beta firmwares apparently disable a lot of features.

The beta firmware doesn't disable ANYTHING. It might just lack support for certain things though, but those are FEW and far between.

@Ayle: A lot of features?
Can you point to a reference of a list of features that were disabled?

TIA

It would be hard for novices to tell the difference between a magnetometer and gps based compass anyway. To most people, "compass", means the map getting rotated according to the direction you're walking in...

@shadowjk: really? can the map rotate when you're not moving?
afaik it only shows the direction when you're moving and the gps is on (and gets proper signal).

It would be interesting if some of the delay(and a horribly expensive delay it would be) if Nokia has internally decided, "we must add this hardware, because everyone is asking about this hardware the iphone and g1 have and it's going to seriously hurt our chances with our target market if we don't have it."

While we complain about lack of USB host that is not on those other 2 phones. It's near impossible to imagine a huge company like Nokia doing that but I have no insight into such things.

Right. A proper compass is necessary if you want any of these 'augmented reality' applications where you can get an overlay on your device when you're looking at some building. In those cases you're not moving, so you'll need _both_ the GPS (for position) and the compass (for direction).

it would make sense.. i know there is alot of work with the firmware, but i won't believe for one second that's the only reason of the delay

No, that's what I said.
