the Medcia Player IMO is the number one problem in file management. There is a program 'tracker' that will check all the media on your N900. Did you add any music?
I would reboot (close the phone by pressing the mid top button long enough) amd be slow in operatying the media palyer. Give the tracker a chance to check the files for media.
It will be better..... I use the media player all the time..

I'm still playing around with it. I'm really loving how the media's being indexed with pictures and stuff for the albums 
It would be nice if the Petrovic plugin was integrated But maybe that'll be added in a later firmware..
