But you don't use the provider at all - that app uses ad-hoc wi-fi connections, I.e. direct connections between devices without going though an AP. If you don't have wi-fi you'd be in trouble though, but then Bluetooth should be included anyway to broaden the machines that could run it.

The first image shows a sort of radar view, which while it can't give direction, does give relative distance from (afaict from reading a couple of articles) the number of intermediate devices that have been used to connect the two via a mesh network.

I would think ad hoc wifi plus xmpp link local plus pubsub would accomplish the basics of this thne you just need a gui
