I am quoting the instruction as was written in http://wiki.maemo.org/N900_USB_networking . Please, tell me where I am making the mistake.
If you are typing "/etc/network/interfaces", then your N900 will try and run the 'interfaces' file as a script. It's not a script it's a configuration file and needs to be edited with a text editor.

It's much easier for us to see what's happening if you copy/paste from xterm to here.
