I believe help was offered yet you did not respond directly to a post id'ing your problem: installing usb-hostmode went wrong leaving your device compromised. If you disagree then reply as much. Or ask for a clarification.
Edit: (deleted bit about reflashing) doh, I now see your reflash problem. Sorry. So the retracing your steps advice holds.

First off: I am not entirely sure that usbmode did the damage. It could have. Whatever, either the usb drivers (installed via the kernel) are damaged or there is a connector fault on the port. Given the n900 history with the usb port your troubles could be the start of the port detaching. Ever gentle wiggling of the connector can get cracks to close and reconnect. You can more easily monitor kernel messages by using in a root terminal
Code:
cat /proc/kmsg
Wiggling is risky for obvious reasons but it can show up the problem.

You may need to reflash and need to researchj how to do that given that the usb is giving trouble. What OS on the desktop/laptop are you using? If it is Win 7 then there are known issues you can search for.

But first, try to reinstall usbmode (long shot) as root:
Code:
apt-get install --reinstall usbmode
Another thing to try is to get copies of the usb drivers for the kernel version you are running. I am offhand unsure of what ALL those drivers are given the install of usbmode. Can anyone help here? PS: looking at "cat /proc/kmsg" whilst switching between modes in usbmode will show at least some of the drivers.

PPS: thinking about Pali's response to your usbmode post, where he thought your plugged-in device was faulty suggests that there is nothing wrong with what the kernel sees as happening in the usb subsystem. That I fear points to the usb port rather than drivers.

I have never enquired whether kernel-power is reinstallable (anyone?). You cannot simply uninstall it but reinstall.... needs a search. If possible, then yes reinstall along with usbmode.

Will look at /proc/kmsg and usb on my n900 when time permits.
