multi-generational trip...the only way in the near future ...flat out.
An absolutely massive ship built in space meant to be simply an interstellar transport (when it reaches destination a smaller ship(s) meant to handle atmospheric entry can be launched from it to reach the surface) can be assembled on the cheap.

Better still ...grab a huge chunk of rock floating up there , build an extensive base on it...then launch it to destination...
oh yea! Space 1999 baby
..better idea...at least from a psychological point of view...the passengers having the "feel" of ground under their feet ...and the sight of it looking out a window...considering the distance involved and the multiple generation trip it will be...
such considerations to make the crew as comfy and stable as possible with conditions as earth-like as possible may mean success or failure....

last thing we need is just one case of ..."Space Madness".

Hmmm. A lump of rock hurtling through an interstellar space towards Earth 2... What an intrigueing idea!
Let me think...

How do you want to keep an atmosphere from evaporating without a roof? The rock would have to be massive enough to hold on to its own atmosphere for a long enough period (at least a few generations). I am not an astro-physicist but I would assume at least 1/10 of the Earth's mass. To accelerate that kind of mass to a reasonable speed would require a tremendous amount of energy.

How do you want to stop it from freezing through? You have seen photos of the Sun from the Cassini probe. It looks like a bright star. And that's still well within the solar system. Beyond the orbit of Neptune, your rock will experience an eternal night, with no heat coming from the sky. You would have to heat it from below or carry your own sun with you.

How do you want to protect the crew from interstellar background radiation? The sky would provide no heat but it would compensate by providing a lot of cosmic rays, gamma rays and charged particles. Your crew's DNA would be shredded to smithereens in a couple of months, let alone generations.

A pressurised metal can may not look like an attractive proposition, but I would take that over a lump of rock any time

Oh no...I wouldn't think on scale of habitable atmosphere on exterior of rock...interesting thought though...and yea various exotic radiations would be an issue...
I was figuring that building suitably protected buildings on said rock or better ...could hollow said rock with necessary facilities for habitation.
Better protection...

Even the fastest humans and spacecraft launched thus far would take many thousands of years to reach the closest stars. Speeds about 75 times faster than this would be required if we hope to make an interstellar trip in less than a hundred years.

To understand the difficulty of interstellar travel, one mustcomprehend the incredible distance involved. Even the closest star is more than 266,000 times farther away than our own sun. Consider the speed of light. Light, the fastest thing known, takes only 8 minutes to travel to us from the sun, but requires more than four years to get to the nearest star.

A handgun bullet travels at 720 miles per hour, but would take nearly 4 million years to get to the nearest star. The fastest object ever launched into space is the Voyager 1 probe, and it would take nearly 75,000 years to make the trip.

Today’s chemical rockets are far too slow for interstellar travel. To have a hope of reaching the closest star in less than a hundred years, we wouldhave to accelerate a starship to nearly 30 million mph.

Rockets using nuclear fusion or antimatter propulsion could do the job, but they would have to be developed. It is theoretically possible that by warping space, a starship might travel faster than light without violating the laws of physics within its own bubble of space-time.

We have to come up with something impossible to reach earth 2

Has anyone seen the film "Interstellar"? What a load of cr@p! My only concsolation is that I did not pay the full price. I would be seriously pi$$ed if I'd paid the full £10 for the ticket.

Earth is dying. No science is taking place, all people are employed only in jobs that are directly involved in survival (such as farmers). The space exploration of the 20th and 21st century are put down. Kids are taught at school about "fake" moon landings. Ex-NASA scientists have founded a secret Illuminati-style organization to continue the scientific research. They found a space portal on the Jupiter's (or was it Saturn's?) orbit. So far so good. The rest is a total rubbish.

So they secretly build a spaceship. They ditch pilots they have been secretly training for years in favour of an ex-fighter pilot, now a farmer, whom they've only just met. They assemble a motley crew and send it off. It takes two years to reach the portal. They fly through it and emerge in another galaxy. And suddenly they can hop from one star to another in a matter of weeks, using the same ship that took years to fly across just a fraction of our sollar system.

The rest is even worse, I won't bother you any more. I would have enjoyed it in mid 1980s whem I was 13-14 and more easily impressed but now...

Maybe that's the kind of vessel we need. Slow within our solar system but suoerfast in the interstellar space

Hehehe...yea pichlo completely agree ...
Gotta come up with something revolutionary to get our species out there ...
we may have a limited time and resource to do it in...but we have lotsa people to experiment..um... test...rm ...with.
Just need to adapt an age old program and apply it directly to human testing.... http://talk.maemo.org/newreply.php?d...eply&p=1456146

I say we just hand applicants the complimentary fishbowl / helmet and pull out the ...what ...oversized particle cannon? ...giant slingshot? ..and just start launchin' ...
I pay pretty close attention to film critics here...and they've been sayin' the visual demonstration of the science is pretty good.
The plot however was noted for being a fail.
Including how the leading lady ends up being portrayed...
So I never bothered to see that one.

But you my good man pichlo ... should start a film review corner... on maemo here...that was a good review.
