Samsung doesn't appear to be in a hurry to bring Tizen to market. It might stay a mere R&D project until somebody eventually decides to cancel it. After two years of development I still don't see any motivation on Samsung's side to make anything with Tizen.

I'd be happy if you could prove me wrong, though.

Anyway, Firefox OS is what Tizen would have promised to be. Mozilla delivered, Samsung did not (yet?).

Normally I would agree with you...But https://developer.tizen.org/contests...-app-challenge... makes me think that Samsung at least planning to release some kind of device.(Even if these amounts means nothing to Samsung) I just can't see that they are creating something like this just to cancel the whole thing. Can you?

And then they don't even manage to open the challenge for all of EU, not to mention many other countries as well?

Intel had a MeeGo challenge as well, before they cancelled the project.
It's different divisions in a company that plan the challenges, do the development, plan device releases, or cancel pointless long-run R&D projects...
And judging from the Tizen mailing list, the divisions don't know much about what the others are doing. At least this is what it appears to me.

That would be truly lame if they cancelled the whole thing!

What was the prize in the Intel app contest. 6 beers or 5 dollar for the winner? Intel isn't Samsung and Samsung is not Intel...

Individual prizes in the MeeGo challenge ranged up to $ 50,000.

Samsung and Intel are both involved with Tizen. And both are not in the need to bring Tizen to market. Samsung and Intel are both doing well on Android and Windows and this isn't going to change soon.

OTOH, Jolla's survival depends on bringing Sailfish to market. They have a true motivation, unlike Intel and Samsung.

Btw, the MeeGo developers basically learned about the project being cancelled when they returned from summer vacation in 2011.

Interesting thing is Tizen is a joint project with Intel but it's rumoured Samsung are planning to use their own ARM based processors with Tizen.

It's also rumoured Samsung will announce their own 'S Cloud' service in conjunction with their first Tizen device(s). Hopefully they'll have the good sense to make sure none of their servers are situated in the USA, UK, Canada or Australia.
