I have an Otterbox case for my N900 and the first thibg I did was cut out the silicon covers. Too much stress on the USB connector of the N900.

More importantly, the silicon cover protects the entry point for unwanted particles. I make trips to fine sand beaches on a weekly basis and always get sand on no matter how careful I am.
