There must be a way around it, where are the Maemo pros ? xD
I'm a Maemo n00b, so I have no idea if this will work for you but it's worth a shot: I was getting the same error message with .mkv and.avi files. I opened them through the file manager and they worked fine -- I can now open them directly through the default media player.

I downloaded extra decoders support and am running PR 1.2.

Mplayer and KMplayer will play just about any format you place into it. If it's still not playing then your source video has an issue. Commonly if your source video it to large in size ( 1200 x 900 ) it won't play because the player is trying to compress and crop with is a lot of work.

Best to reencode your source videos with something like Handbrake to what the N900 needs.

Reflashed now and everything's working fine again.

Is there a way to zoom a movie ?
The black bars at top and bottom are really annoying and I would like to remove them by zooming in the entire picture.
Is there a way to do that with the built in or any other player ?

Well, you could just use VLC-player. Its pretty fast and easy to install, just add the following repository:
Address: http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/maemo/
Distripution: fremantle
Components: free
