Indeed, that's the plan. Is there an RPC/JSON API? If not, I've already worked out how to do the screen scraping; but something more robust is desirable.

/opt/catorise/menu can be edited to shuffle things around and they won't get overwritten (unless you put them in other or an invalid section).

Once edited, you can run - as root - /opt/catorise/catorise to regenerate.

It's supposed to be done on application install/uninstall using dpkg triggers and, indeed, it works for me. If you install something using apt-get, as root, in X Terminal does it show a line of the form:

Code:
Catorise: Updating menu structure...

the theme keep changing to blue default is a bug in ovi store themes

v0.0.2 is on its way to Extras-devel. Changelog:
  • Ignore location of 'other' items when reloading cached menu.
  • Add an 'Ovi' category pending better categorisation of Ovi-sourced items.
  • Fix theme handling; credit also to Marcin Juszkiewicz for a patch to do the same.
  • Fix multi-sectioned .desktop files (e.g. Web); credit also to hrw again for a patch to do the same.

Upcoming work:
  • Use .desktop file categories, if present (the community chose the package sections on Maemo to align with the desktop menu categories on purpose :-))
  • Try and register a DBus service to pick up theme changes.
  • Use the localisation strings from App Manager (although wrapping is an issue in the application menu; in that it doesn't).
  • Further Ovi categorisation work.
  • Work out why some people get "More..." ordered alphabetically.
  • Work out why auto-rerun on application install/uninstall isn't working for some people.

You could just get the info through apt-cache show $pkg-name

As I understand it, PR1.2 will eliminate "More" and put all installed applications on one, long, scrollable, "page". Actually grouping applications will be Fixed in Harmattan.

Yeah, we've hit that point already. Whee.

What info? That's exactly what Catorise does for applications from Extras; however applications from Ovi only have a section of user/hidden and no additional categorisation information AFAICS.

I thought it was hidden/whatevercategory

And shouldn't the category for the app be in the desktop file anyway?

No. Level, Bounce Evolution and Angry Birds all have Section: user/hidden. All, apart from Leve have Priority: optional too, FWIW.

Can be. But I'm not aware of a single Maemo application which does so at the moment.
