finally, i'm able to connect to my uni's wlan network, this is how..
there are 2 networks in my uni, UConnect & UConnect-Setup, i connected to UConnect-Setup, login by entering username and password and obtain and register an MAC address first. i had to do this with Ubuntu as well but i didn't need to do this last year..

then only i can connect to UConnect and:

Use Automatically: No
Network Mode: Infrastructure
Security Method: WPA EAP
WPA EAP type: PEAP
Select certificate: None
EAP Method: EAP MSCHAPv2
Username: <username> without domain
Password: <password>

Advanced settings:

Auto-retrieve IP address: Yes
Auto-retrieve DNS address: Yes
Manual username: Yes
Manual username: <username> without domain as well
Require client authentication: No

I found N900 *much* *much* easier to setup for WPA-EAP-PEAP-MSCHAPv2 than Symbian (in fact, in supporting two WiFi networks like this, the only phone that was easier to set up was iPhone, as if it can't validate the cert it asks you to accept it). Symbian has most common EAP and PEAP modules disabled, and gives a very cryptic error message when you don't have the CA certificate installed on the phone.

Maybe the Symbian "features" (EAP-PEAP, EAP-TTLS etc. disabled by default, MSCHAPv2 disabled by default etc.) were ported to N9 :-/
