I know you could do this on Symbian phones and they did work. As far as I know from others, the N900 had already the same problem (and see also numerous reports and threads here on maemo.org and elsewhere); the Linux implementation done by Nokia is somehow messed up.
there are 2 networks in my uni, UConnect & UConnect-Setup, i connected to UConnect-Setup, login by entering username and password and obtain and register an MAC address first. i had to do this with Ubuntu as well but i didn't need to do this last year..
then only i can connect to UConnect and:
Connection name: UConnect
Network name (SSID): UConnect
Use Automatically: No
Network Mode: Infrastructure
Security Method: WPA EAP
WPA EAP type: PEAP
Select certificate: None
EAP Method: EAP MSCHAPv2
Username: <username> without domain
Password: <password>
Advanced settings:
Proxy configuration: No proxy
Auto-retrieve IP address: Yes
Auto-retrieve DNS address: Yes
Manual username: Yes
Manual username: <username> without domain as well
Require client authentication: No
Hidden WLAN: No
WPA2 only mode: No
