Erm, feel a bit ashamed.

-L 9090:pop.btinternet.com:110

modest (just similar to smtp):
server 127.0.0.1
port 9090

What was wrong is that you are gonna establish the connection from N900. I got confused because of receiving/sending, but both connections are established from your device.

Makes sense, I am used to 'reverse' tunnels (for remote logon to 'roving' devices') and did wonder if or not, reverse was really required here.
Thanks, I'm sure that this will work...

Spoke too soon....
Ports look ok but evolution is reporting:-
Error while Fetching Mail.
Could not connect to 127.0.0.1: Connection refused.
(I AM using using port 9090 on evolution)

Update:-
Reboot & now working....
Thanks for your patience...

One last question, on modest, it doesn't let you edit the 'receiving from'
address on a pre-defined email account (can change the smtp field ok).
In other words, can't easily change from pop.btinternet.com to 127.0.0.1.
I have had to define another account. I would like to change the original, if possible. Anyone here lead me to which file to edit please?

OK, one last answer

You know gconftool or gconftool-2?
If yes check out tree /apps/modest/server_accounts/
Code:
gconftool-2 -R /apps/modest/server_accounts
in case maybe grep ( | grep btinternet -C 5 ) or similar

If not get used with it and try out. But proposing to make a backup (backupmenu) before.
