I think we are exagerating the screen issue - yes even I like the 4.3 " screen and cant think of a smaller size, but again a 3.5" screen with a good UI isn't a deal-breaker either. If enough features are in it - I am sure many of us will overturn our dislike of this rumoured device.

As pure conjecture, I think Nokia will bring out this one as a phone device and a larger screened pure tablet (i.e. no GSM voice) as a tablet/netbook device.

That fulfills 2 markets - people who want a phone-in-all device as well as tablet purists. In fact a larger screen tablet could compete with the rumored iTablet or MID's.

Again: this is truly dependent upon specific use cases.

Arrgh - I will NOT buy a device that requires a contract or that is carrier locked! If I wanted that I'd just get the n97 ( or Pre, or Iphone, etc, etc. )

T-Mobile, at least in the US, doesn't require contracts. You can get any of their phones on Flexpay Month to Month. That means you pay full price for the phone, get almost all of the same plan options that you'd get under contract, but you're not under contract, you're paying "month to month".

As for being locked, after some period (3 months? 6? 9?) you can get your phone unlocked, as well. Assuming you don't find an unlockng service that can do it sooner.

I wish we could get actual confirmations. If this is the case can leave now and save a lot of people headaches. Man they should have leaked this a month ago

I thought this place was community run? Do the leaks really need to be external to us. Some inclusion would be nice.

We have enough of conjecture since the last 2.5 years. If nokia is going this way i think it is important that we know so that we can make our decisions.

It would be nice if there were multiple Maemo products in the pipeline... a phone or two, a tablet or two (a tablet phone or two), a netbook/9" tablet. And that actually seems like it would be something that would be in Nokia's interests to advertise (esp. if we're going to see the first one land as soon as August). It would give us all a sense of the roadmap for Maemo devices, and sooth our fears about some of the devices that each of us may or may not want.

(in each case, my "or two" was intended to reflect with or without hardware keyboard)

Why Nokia cannot compete with an iPhone with multitasking and improved camera, copy-paste and even keyboard?

Just tell me why not? Because App Store has more applications than OVI Store? Because OSX of iPhone is more stable than Linux Maemo?

I would say no, Apple will not win.

And I'll tell you why:
1) Linux / Maemo has a big develope community (not like Symbian)
2) Maemo supports Flash with Java, WebKit applications, C++, Java, Python and QT w KDE, etc. It is easier to program Maemo having all these frameworks than iPhone and Symbian (Symbian C++ is hard)
3) The nice thing about iPhone is the TOY interface, it is like a Casino machine with its colorful icons and its list scrolling. But list scrolling without scroll-bar and just one click and drag the list with different speeds for smooth scrolling can be added on Maemo as well.
4) Hope the Ovi Publish will be open for any independent developer (now it is only opened for companies - bad move) with normal fees like App Store has ($99 for life) and not $50 sunscription , then $300 per year and another $200 to sign the application.
5) Nokia emerges with its services like Ovi/Nokia Maps (Apple does not have maps) and Ovi Share and Ovi Contacts, email, messenger.
6) iPhone popularity was built on just a myth, it is not anymore the single touch phone toy on the market, but to fight it, Nokia needs to channel its commercials and all the software improvements to have a device with a GUI at least the same user-friendly and playful as iPhone.

I think the phrase a few of you are looking for is not "confirmation" nor "details" but "product announcement".

And, despite our loyal following all these years, we (probably) won't get the announcement here first. The Big Press will get it first, because Nokia's a Big Company and they don't post product announcements in forums or on community websites.

(it is remotely possible that Nokia might do something crazy this time and make the product announcement on maemo.org first. They've surprised me a couple of times in the last two years, starting with their creation of the N800)

This thread is ON FIRE!

Considering that it's only been two days, and it's about the breach the half-thousand point. It's a full-time gig to just keep up.

I gotta get back to work. This N900 isn't going to buy itself...

For my own part I would be satisfied with just an official: "There will be device in the N8x0 class in 2009 (delivery in Europe/Germany)". That's all I'd like to see, no specs, details or other fancy stuff... Just so that I know I don't have to look for an alternative.....
