So what can be wrong with mine sensor? I sended phone to service and when phone came back, proximity sensor wont work. So i decided repair phone by myself because i have problems with service and lost warranty.

1. I reflashed phone
2. i do upgrade sys-ui
3. i buy new sensor and replaced it
4. and one time reflashed

but phone still not work...Where can be problem?

I was also facing this problem. I found that coderus System UI is causing this for me. Use N9QT to uninstall this and see if the problem is gone.

I am also having this same issue. Is there any way to know for sure that sensor(hardware) is broken?
This will help me to decide whether to buy new one or not.

Make a phone call, and while the phone call is still in progress, cover the proximity sensor with your finger (top-right corner of the screen), the display should blank and appear again when you move your finger. This still works for me.

tried all methods and still no luck, now ordered Lumia 800 proxomity sensor. Let's see if that works.

Had the same problem with my N9, display didn't turn off, rebooting didn't help, then i was reading all of this posts about the problem. Then I tried, as someone suggested, reseting settings that are on N9 in menu and worked for me just fine. Display now turn off as it should .

How exactly did you do this?

Did you go to Settings / Reset / Restore settings? What other settings were reset?

Yes! Well, mainly basic settings were restored, like Sounds and vibrations, Display settings, Battery settings, Wallpaper etc... Apps and my personal settings, contacts, accounts.. were not affected as it says in User guide. But it did mess up all my apps on apps screen, all apps were all over the place, folder were empty..., so I had to organize my apps back to how it looked before ( before reseting I made screenshots of my app icons arrangement )!

Sorry, that I raise this old topic, but I found this issue with my phone too. And I hope this post will help someone.
I found solution for this without reset or restore phone settings
All we need is mcetools package.
Code:
~# apt-get install mcetools
If we check the status of mce we can see something like this (in my case):
Code:
~# mcetool --status
...
Blank inhibit:                           stay on
...
I change this to 'stay on with charger' (you can get other possible values with --help):
Code:
~# mcetool --set-inhibit-mode=stay-on-with-charger
We can check status again:
Code:
~# mcetool --status
...
Blank inhibit:                           stay on with charger
...
And thats all, screen turned off after defined timeout
