Hmm..
People saying Nokia screen resolution is 800*480 so it can't play higher resolution than that it's wrong.
I had samsung sgh-i450 before with 320*240 resolutin but it could play 720*480 videos with coreplayer and smartmovie.
the playback capability isn't determined by screen resolution but by processor and the software u using, How well the the software resize it according to screen.
I have played 720p videos on N900 using Nitdroid 0.0.8 before using roxplayer or rokplayer i don't remember the name. But strangely mkv and mp4 play much better using Nitdroid then using N900 default player.

wouldnt nitdroid just downscale the video to fit the screen res anyway? so its pointless.

what people are saying is that is a waste of processing power. the screen resolution is only 800x480 and if you manage to play a video with a higher resolution, the video will be scaled to fit the 800x480 and there wont be any gain. its a wast of space too. it wont look better. if you take a h.264 codec mp4 video at 1000kbps bitrate, it will look better that the same video im mpeg-4 codec at the same resolution.
There is no HD tv out from n900 either so having that large size video is a waste of space. So you are not going to feel that the 720p video is better that 800x480 as it wont show all those pixels! it will be scaled down.
To the original poster, dont bring insults to someone's mother! Its very rude! People were trying to tell you some technical aspects of the video playback.

It's better to have an 800x480 video with a better codec and bitrate rather than a 1280x720 video scaled down to your screen. Wastes more space, as people already mentioned here, and also peaks your CPU.

It's shameful to see people bashing someone because of their poor english.

@Freemangordon well I guess it wouldn't actually show 720p over composite. Not that I've tried. Regardless, perhaps push it through usb by some wizardry or other?
No way of course, what I mean is that I am not able to program framebuffer overlay HW scaler to downsample 720p to PAL/NTSC resolution. It just refuses . I find a way to do that by using SGX, but it draws on the same graphics plane as media players (and other SW), thus overwriting buttons in MP, etc. Anyway I will put that project on hold for a while (until I fix the bug in CSSU portrait task-switcher)

Once some clever people find a way to record 720p videos on the N900 then the capability of playing 720p will become a necessity even on our 480p display ;-)

The people saying "LOLZ JUST REENCODE TROL!OL!OL!11one".
The point of being able to play 720p is just that- I have hundreds of 720p video, I have whole series in 720p. I am not going to waste time reencoding everything, increasing harddrive space (Im not deleting the 720p originals).

So instead of copying a few 2.5gb video files, you expect me to spend 45 minutes or so on each file to encode it beforehand? Surely, you jest!

And no, we dont want to "VIEW 720P ON 800x480 RES !11one", l2downscale.

Thanks for clearing that up for us.

Anytime. I did stop reading after page 3 or so, too many "lols reencode" posts.
