I do not know about Dave but my reason would be that science can be verified. That is the very definition of science.

It would not be very scientific to take something just announced without an independent confirmation as a fact, would it? That would be the realm of religion, not science. I take unconfirmed statements for what they are: unconfirmed statements. They may be true or not.

That applies in all aspects of my life, not only ostentatiously scientific. It must be my scientific upbringing. It does sometimes get me in trouble with a certain kind of people
