Nokia official dismisses report of Cisco interest
http://in.today.reuters.com/news/new...a-211956-1.xml
>>> HELSINKI (Reuters) - A Nokia spokeswoman said on Monday a weekend newspaper report that Cisco Systems Inc was considering making a bid for the top mobile phone maker seemed to be "pure fabrication".

>>>Nokia's policy remains not to comment on rumours, the spokeswoman said, but added that an article in the Business, a London-based newspaper, seemed to be "pure fabrication based on rumours on the Internet".

>>>Nokia shares were up 1.78 percent at 13.15 euros by 0949 GMT, having earlier been up as much as 3.3 percent.

-- Nokia, you should know better than to insult the Vast And Living Internet System!

Nokia declines comment on report has dismissed Cisco bid noise as 'fabrication'

>>>HELSINKI (AFX) - Nokia Corp declined to comment on newspaper speculation that it could be a bid target for Cisco Systems Inc, or on a newswire report that the Finnish handset giant had dismissed the print article as "pure fabrication".

>>>"We are not willing to comment on the story at all. If there is anything we want to say, we will put out a statement," a spokeswoman said.

Nokia Sees Shortages Of N90 Phone Due To Strong Demand
http://money.iwon.com/jsp/nw/nwdt_rt...as/money/cm/nw

Although widely rumored to be after a career in Finnish politics, he has announced that he will take over the chairmanship of oil giant Shell instead.

Porting GPE-Calendar is a lot harder than a lot of ./configure; make; make-install “ports” to Maemo, and it looks like it is coming along nicely. The Nokia 770 is still officially not a PDA mind you, but the more solid apps available for the platform on launch day the better.

I don't know.... I'm beginning to think I should do *second* blog. One perhaps called "Of Interest To 770 Owners." This one would congregate all the stuff that is *not* directly about the 770 itself. Maybe Reggie will do a poll. It's not really more work for me. Just posting stuff in a *different* thread.

Anyway, 99% of the below falls into the "Of Interest To..." category...

Local.com New Local Search Engine Launches
http://www.searchenginejournal.com/index.php?p=2024
>>>Keyword DNA utilizes business characteristics such as location, service area, and business-specific keywords among other data to create a unique meta-profile for over 16 million U.S. local businesses. Interchange’s local-web index delivers relevant web listings for specific geographic areas. Some search results and core data info is also supplied by Acxiom Data Services while local targeted paid search advertising is handled via ePilot (this is probably going to be one of ePilot’s largest distribution channels as ePilot is also owned by Interchange).
-- one of the things I *hate* doing on the Net is searching for *local* stuff. Perhaps this will alleviate/fix that chore? This might also be useful for travelers with the 770, looking for local stuff in their guest city.

This might be the Second Coming of the Internet. Now, if I can just get my hands on some capital to invest. What is RadioTime?
http://www.radiotime.com/
>>>RadioTime makes it easy to find better radio and listen when you like. The service includes a free web-based personalized guide to radio programs with desktop software to listen live, or later from MP3 files. Think of "TiVo for Radio". It's like having a personalized podcast from most any radio program.
-- ah, now this sounds (no pun intended!) like just the thing for the 770's streaming radio capability! The 770: A Radio TiVo in Your Hand!

Concurrent and GoldPocket Announce Integrated Applications for On-Demand
http://www.ecmag.net/Articles/Articl...ArticleID=8341
>>>GoldPocket's advanced media solutions, combined with Concurrent's MediaHawk IMS, is designed to enable two-way interactivity with on-demand programming content, allowing consumers to customize their television viewing experience. GoldPocket technology enables users viewing on-demand programs to "telescope" to advertising, commerce capabilities, or other specialized content via "hotspots," or visual cues that are layered on top of the content. GoldPocket's StoryTeller, an interactive authoring product, allows providers to customize on-demand interfaces to reflect their content, creating these hotspots that highlight content specifically tailored to a viewer's preferences. The latest addition to Concurrent's on-demand platform, the MediaHawk Interactive Media Solution (IMS), helps service providers offer targeted promotions and advertising, taking the on-demand navigation process to an interactive level. Concurrent's MediaHawk IMS, with its in-band streaming technology, provides a solid foundation to support the interactive applications available from GoldPocket Interactive.

-- a bit of history is in order here. During the glorious First Coming of the Internet, GoldPocket ran a live, real-time trivia game with a million-dollar prize, called Live Trivia. What Business Can Learn from Open Source
http://www.paulgraham.com/opensource.html
>>>Like open source, blogging is something people do themselves, for free, because they enjoy it. Like open source hackers, bloggers compete with people working for money, and often win. The method of ensuring quality is also the same: Darwinian. Companies ensure quality through rules to prevent employees from screwing up. But you don't need that when the audience can communicate with one another. People just produce whatever they want; the good stuff spreads, and the bad gets ignored. And in both cases, feedback from the audience improves the best work.

http://www.corante.com/futuretense/a...pen_source.php

>>>Armed with $60 million in first round venture funding, Amp'd Mobile is gearing up to battle the giants of the wireless world with the planned launch of its broadband mobile phone services targeting 18-to-35-year-olds.
-- MVNO, another acronym to give me a headache. OK, kids, which would you rather do? Squint at a wee cellphone screen while your per-month minutes go drip-drip-drip down the drain, or be at a free public WiFi hotspot viewing stuff on a 770's big screen? It seems to me that at some point A Corporate Pinstriper will wake up to the fact that cellcos and free public hotspots cannot peacefully co-exist. Then will either come the Night of the Long Knives for Free WiFi or the collapse and death of the Hold-'em-Hostage-and-Bleed-Them Typical Corporate Cellco. Keep being smug, Cellco, Inc. Back in the 1980s, there was this very popular online service called CompuServe. They actually thought they were delivering *value* at a connect-time rate of $3.00 *per hour* (actually, it might have been $3.50, if not even $4) -- until the Internet showed up with ISPs charging a flat unlimited-use monthly fee. Where is the Almighty CompuServe today? Eh? You guys are the next dinosaur to be ground down.

>>>Already it's 2005, and all the hotels (like all the airlines and rental car agencies) still sit out there in their silos, with their stupid, deaf, blind CRM systems, trying to trap and hold (or, in slaveholder parlance, own) customers — about whom their systems know as little as possible — inside. Rather than engage in a truly free (and therefore open) marketplace.
-- it's about Captive WiFi. I love this rant!

Rasiej Plan to Wi-Fi NY
http://www.advocatesforrasiej.com/20...ame=wifi&page=
>>>It’s time to bring New York City into the 21st century.

>>>One big step in that direction will be to bring affordable, universal wireless (”Wi-Fi”) to all New Yorkers.
-- holy cow! If you live in New York City, go read this link!

Calling All Luddites
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/08/03/op...erland&emc=rss
>>>I've been thinking of running for high office on a one-issue platform: I promise, if elected, that within four years America will have cellphone service as good as Ghana's.
-- this is the NY Times site. I hope you've regged! I did warn you earlier.

Why Murdoch Really Bought MySpace?
http://gigaom.com/2005/08/06/why-mur...ought-myspace/
>>>Much like Viacom’s CBS decided to use the broadband web to bypass cable and compete against the 24-hour news networks like CNN and FoxNews (see PaidContent’s coverage here), the acquisition of MySpace positions Murdoch to challenge the dominance of MTV in their category. I’m willing to bet that he will go even further by eventually extending the MySpace brand to include a dedicated cable & satellite network/channel. He is after all an old media guy. In fact, just a couple of weeks before News Corp. announced the deal, we all witnessed the web’s potential in this context when AOL’s webcasting audience for Live 8 outreached MTV and ABC’s ratings of the same event (details here.) Such a data point can go a long way towards justifying a $580 million price tag.
-- so, will MySpace get wise and start partnering with Nokia to offer the 770 to its users? (Not that I want to help Murdoch make money; I detest him! 770 advocacy makes strange bedfellows...)

Ten Things That Will Be Free
http://www.lessig.org/blog/archives/003067.shtml
>>>I started to name the list "Ten Things That Must Be Free" - but this sounded to me too much like an empty political demand. And the point is: this is not a dream list of things which I hope through some magic to become free, but a list of things which I believe are solvable in reality, things that will be free. Anyone whose business model for the next 100 years depends on these things remaining proprietary better watch out: free culture is coming to get you.

AOL Rising
http://www.russellbeattie.com/notebook/1008565.html
>>>Maybe its because I now work at an Internet Portal and thus am more aware of these things, but it seems that AOL is making all the right moves lately to become a serious competitor to MSN and Yahoo! Let's tick off the things they've done over the past month or so:
-- a good list that shows AOL is really making moves. I wasn't aware of any of this. However, AOL is the CompuServe of today... can they avoid its fate?

What Education Can Learn From Open Source
http://educationaltechnology.ca/couros/356
>>>Paul Graham recently offered the interesting essay, “What Business Can Learn From Open Source“. It’s a worthwhile read, and our educational institutions could easily adapt some of idea from the essay. I have taken the liberty of adapting this essay focused on business to suit the educational environment.
-- inspired by what I linked to first in this entry. OK, you guys get one crack at a sequel and this was it. I'm not posting an endless list of "What X Can Learn from Open Source."

What the Dormouse Said: An Interview with John Markoff
http://www.acm.org/ubiquity/intervie...9_markoff.html
>>>I think that in large part many of the values that emerged in the '60s have very much stayed with the computer industry and, in fact, with those responsible for all digital media. I'm thinking particularly of the Open Source movement, which first emerged in the '60s and '70s but didn't really have a huge impact until the mid '90s, and is now very much playing a dramatic role in guiding the direction of technology today.
-- bloody excellent interview, and I must read this book!

Cisco finally comments on those rumors...
Cisco CEO on Nokia: Don’t confuse partnerships with M&A
http://telephonyonline.com/finance/n...rships_080905/
>>>“I was surprised by the credibility the market gave to recent rumors,” Chambers said during the company’s fiscal fourth-quarter earnings call Tuesday afternoon, insisting that Cisco’s long-held acquisition strategy has not changed. The company prefers to acquire small, young companies with interesting technologies that share a similar corporate culture and geographic proximity with Cisco. As many analysts pointed out, that strategy is entirely inconsistent with the idea of acquiring a large, foreign vendor like Nokia.
