I disagree. the important thing is not the size of the button, but by how much you can misclick without toutching the wrong button.
now compare the distance "middle of button" - "border of other button" on the two designs, and you can see that with smaller buttons they actually need less precision (it doesn't matter if you push two or three time the inactive zone, as long as you end up clicking the good one).

Note that a vertical design with more space between the buttons would do as well.

This really does blow, i had several lined up that I kept putting off.

There is a public bug tracker at https://bugs.maemo.org/. It's still open for community software and the website, but not for Nokia software. I'm not sure when it was closed for Nokia software.
