I wonder if devices like this (other than being able to support multiple devices) have any advantages over just getting a spare battery.

I guess the only advantage would be not having to take out the battery... haha.

They're also usually easier to recharge on the go - you can plug them into any USB port. The one I have actually uses 2 AA rechargeable batteries internally, so it also doubles as a battery charger (and I always have 2 AA batteries handy as well).
