You could try adding the avatars for each IM account individually:
status area > availability > tap each account and set an avatar. i had to do this for my IMs to correctly display my picture. Changing it once in contacts' "my information" tab didnt help.
Edit: I'm assuming its your own picture that isnt displaying...
