Luckily the N900 boots very quickly. It's literally a minute. I have an external charger (got it for 5 dollars from some web shop) that you plug in an ordinary Nokia "Miniplug charger" into, so I always have one full battery and one in the N900. I basically never have to be without a battery, unless I'm on a long trip...
