Hi all,

I have looked around and am finding it hard to get a definitive simple way of doing this, which probably means its not simple but here goes anyway.

1. Is there a way to stream media files stored on the N900 to my desktop?

2. Similarly whats the best way to stream directly to my N900 from my desktop?

Solutions for Linux or Windoze, don't care really just want to know the possibilities.

In the words of Dr Crane......Thanks for listening

Depends on your definition of "desktop". I have all my media on an Acer Revo running XBMC on Linux, which shares the media out by uPNP/DLNA, and it just shows up in the standard media player (but, does not do transcoding by default, and N900 may not play all types by DLNA that it supports for local files). I think xbmc *can* transcode, but I really don't want to watch media I have in 720p or 1080p in 480p. It does work very well for music though.

If you don't want to run XBMC all the time, coherence (on Linux) is also able to share by DLNA (while you run a standard desktop).

For Windows, I guess Windows Media player should be able to do this too?

I have just started experimenting with sharing at my house. When my N900 is connected over wifi, my housemate's W7 DT shows up in File Manager and Media Player, and I can access some media on it. But it doesn't seem to work the other way yet...

I like the n900 very much to look films from my desktop or any other computer.

You can directly stream with the Media Player in Windows.
The Media Player on the n900 sees the uPnP player and plays the files directly fluently in best quality!!!
I've watched big movies compressed for FullHd on the n900.
The stock Media Player plays it flawlessly (if it knows the codecs).

Also.Tvidity streams directly to the stock media player.

I'm also streaming with a little linux box (asus wl500gp) to the n900.
Works perfectly! I use "ushare".

I'm also streaming with a lacie edmini to the n900.

I'm not streaming with n900 to desktop. I've installed vlc but did never try to stream. It's easier to use TV out.

I have managed to get some pictures to stream to a PS3 using PS3MediaStreamer. I also was able to stream a basic mp4 video clip.

The files should also show up on XBMC. You can download it for Windows or Linux.
