It has no problem recognising the SIMs, the same SIMs work in an old Sony Ericsson 750.

It shows no reception icon at all.

Yesterday, I noticed that it had far worse reception than the SE 750 and so I'm suspecting a hardware problem.

My USB port is loose and so I'd need to resolder that to reflash.

This is my 2nd N900 and so I do have working parts if the repair is easy to do.

As you suspect, possible hardware failure.

As always only a full reflash will rule out software issues.

Have you tried 2G or 3G only mode?
Any debug messages with devtools? dmesg?

Turns out odd bits of what I thought were plastic when putting my N900 back together are aerials.

http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=80339

I didn't screw them in properly and when I messed up my USB & switch to an external battery charger, swapping batteries dislodged what shouldn't have worked very well in the first place.

This poor reception led to another problem -- the batteries drained in 2-3 hours. I blamed the charger (which may have actually worked) and eventually acquired Nokia's own DT-33. The batteries still didn't work so bought a couple of Pisens which didn't work much better.

Anyway, tightened the screws now and am on full bars. Hopefully, the batteries will start lasting a couple of days rather than hours now.

Battery drain is almost as bad as before -- 6 hours even in Offline Mode and 70% C4.

Weird how all this stuff started at the same time.

I'll probably start a new thread on that though if I can't isolate it myself.
