Sorry, but this program does nothing to alarms. It only displays time of alarms - and nothing more.
Maybe something like EvilAlarm can help You?

I do not know, what's wrong, but I do not see the widget in the list of widgets to add to the desktop. I have added the extras-devel catalogue, installed nextalarm, and deactivated extras-devel again. the file /usr/share/applications/hildon-home/nextalarmwidget.desktop (and other nextalarm files) is available, but the widget is not. it is the only widget of Type=qt - can this be the problem?

Just reboot your device.

Have You searched it on all desktops?
Also You can try to install needed libs manually from x-terminal:

p.s. I've uploaded a new version. Changes:
* fixed font size resetting when first font is selected
* optional filter to show standard alarms only
* "no alarms" replaced with "--:--" text
* optional time remaining display
* optional alarm text display
