The emulator you're referring to is the same composed for the Pandora. The stated figures is my honest guestimate without overclocking!
The n64 emulator runs decent (ave 40fps) but nowhere near fullspeed ON THE PANDORA. And the Pandora requires you to exit XDLE mode, close all running background apps and overclock to 800MHz from 550MHZ. All features that are not possible on N900 without a developer making adjustments. If someone can make the Maemo 5 run ultralight (eg close all background tasks) and maybe overclock to 700MHz it would reach a similar state. Why? Pandora OS was built console-oriented and N900 boasts an extra 744Mb RAM though virtual.

Now with VICE and UAE it begs even more heavily to get some kind of sensible controller to use with them! The cursor keys aren't all that good for 8-directional controlling

Is the PS3 controller going to be any better than Wiimote? These old Amiga and C64 etc. games usually need the ability to use the diagonal directions well, something which is not easy on a 4-way cross controller.
